NAET tends to arrive by word of mouth. A friend mentions it, a book references it, and before long you’re searching to find out what the letters actually mean. This page is here to answer that plainly: what NAET is, where it came from, and what a session looks like at Morning Sun Acupuncture in Austin.

NAET is a drug-free, non-invasive complementary method created in 1983 by Dr. Devi S. Nambudripad. It blends concepts from Applied Kinesiology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and nutrition, and it has since been taught to trained practitioners around the world.

Here in North Central Austin, NAET is one of the modalities Stephen Andrews, L.Ac., offers alongside acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. If you’re curious about it, this page will give you a clear, honest picture, and Stephen is glad to answer the rest in person.

The method

What NAET is

NAET was created in 1983 by Dr. Devi S. Nambudripad, an acupuncturist who went on to teach the method to practitioners around the world. More than a single technique, it’s a structured method: it draws its muscle response testing from Applied Kinesiology, its use of points and meridians from Traditional Chinese Medicine, and its attention to foods and nutrients from the field of nutrition.

In classic NAET practice, substances are considered one at a time, in a specific order, across a series of visits. That measured, sequential design is part of what gives the method its character. It is deliberate, gentle, and drug-free from start to finish.

What a session is like

A NAET session at Morning Sun is quiet and unhurried, and you stay fully clothed throughout. Stephen begins with conversation, because context matters to him. From there, a typical session follows the classic NAET protocol: a gentle form of muscle response testing drawn from Applied Kinesiology, in which you hold a small glass vial containing a prepared sample of a specific substance while Stephen applies light pressure to your outstretched arm.

The hands-on portion that follows is just as gentle. Stephen uses light acupressure along points on the back, and may incorporate acupuncture points consistent with his training as a licensed acupuncturist. The session closes with a short rest, and you’ll leave with a few simple instructions to follow at home. There are no drugs involved, nothing invasive, and nothing about the visit is rushed.

The practice

How NAET fits the practice

Stephen Andrews, L.Ac., MAOM, has practiced East Asian medicine for more than 25 years. He trained at AOMA here in Austin and is board certified by the NCCAOM. NAET is one of several modalities in his practice, offered alongside acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, and he approaches all of them the same way: whole person first, method second.

That matters, because NAET isn’t offered as a standalone answer to anything. It’s one thread in a practice built on taking time, asking good questions, and looking at the whole picture of a person’s life. Whether NAET belongs in your care is a conversation, and it’s one Stephen genuinely enjoys having.

Gentle, drug-free, and never rushed.
